First World War Networking Session – 15th March 2013

On Friday 15th March nearly 60 people from various museums, heritage sites, archives, councils, universities, history groups and societies, gathered at the Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham to find out more about each other’s plans for commemorating the centenary of the First World War.

The day began with a networking lunch where everyone got the opportunity to chat to each other about their plans, get further ideas and exchange contact details.  This was then followed by an interesting presentation from Josie Gale, Centenary Programme Museum Liaison Officer for English Regions, which can be viewed in full here.  We also had the opportunity to hear about Kent County Council’s Kent History & Library Centre plans, as well as the Royal Engineers Museum’s offer of object loans.

After more networking over coffee, the group spent the last 45 minutes discussing ways in which we can all work together in a joined up, coherent way enabling everyone to benefit.  Common themes of work appeared, as did the common needs, these being that of how to market and promote our events.

As a result, plans are afoot to establish a Steering Group to lead on the work which includes possibly submitting a partnership HLF project application, starting a Twitter and Facebook account, as well as developing a map of venues and activities taking place between 2014-18.
